The goal is to improve the finish significantly without being overly aggressive on the paint.

A multi-stage paint correction, on the other hand, is a more intensive process that involves multiple steps:

Stage one uses a cutting compound and aggressive pad to remove deeper defects like heavy swirl marks, scratches, water spotting, and oxidation.

Stage two follows up with a polishing step to refine the finish, eliminate haze left by compounding, and bring out a high-gloss shine.

Stage three (optional, but often required for soft or black paints) uses a fine finishing polish to eliminate any remaining micro-marring and deliver a flawless, glass-like finish.

Paint correction can safely remove most surface-level scratches and swirl marks, but deep gouges that have cut through the clear coat may not be fully eliminated.
